AT first glance there is nothing to separate 17 Abi Abdullah Al Aosi Street from the many large houses that surround it. However, a step inside the gate, a brief walk through the door and down the stairs brought you to an Aladdin’s cave of artistic treasure. After its launch, Underground Gallery quickly became the go to place in Riyadh, and it rapidly became the number one attraction for art galleries in Riyadh. At the opening night, there were representatives of 13 different nationalities, each of whom worked in a different style to any of the other artists. This book charts the rise and rise of Underground Gallery, and features the artists who made a name for themselves in the Middle East collectors’ notebooks. As well as exhibitions, Underground hosted poetry evenings, women’s nights, spoken word and meet the artist events, all of which sold out within hours of advertising.
